shrugged his acquiescence. Chris dropped the towel and replaced it with his jeans. He motioned for D.J. to come to him and she did. Chris put his arm around her shoulder and drew her close. Despite the relaxed pose, she could feel the coiled tension of his body. He waited for an opening. When he found one he would strike. She remembered how he had taken out the three men in Outgamie. Even though they'd had a knife and Rich had a gun, some of D.J.'s fear left her at the memory. If she had to face a nutcase like Rich, Chris would be the one she'd chose to have beside her.
Rich stared at the two of them, jealousy shining from his eyes. Rich had never been jealousbut then, he'd never had cause. Until Chris came along she'd had no interest in men, sex, or anything but work.
''I could have told you she isn't worth the trouble," Rich sneered. "I've never had a woman more frigid than D.J."
"Frigid? D.J.?" Chris laughed. "I don't think so. Not with the right man, anyway."
Rich's lips tightened.
D.J.'s lips were numbed by fear. She dug her fingers into Chris's side, warning him to shut up. Rich had always been unpredictable. She had never known what he would do when he got angry. She still had a hard time believing he meant to kill them both. She had to keep him talkingfind out why he'd do such a thing. Then maybe she could figure out a way to talk him out of whatever he had planned. Or at least keep him occupied in the hope her father or Danny made their way up here before
